Not very forgiving, but great control

Srixon has come out with some really good tour-quality equipment over the years. Several pros are playing the ZX7s and a couple are playing the ZX5s.

Now, these are the original ZX5s.  I've done some reading and talked to some players who play the Mark II ZX5s, and the consensus is, the Mark II ZX5s are a step back from the original ZX5s.

I'll be reviewing the original ZX5s, which I believe are the better set of irons.

Appearance:

These clubs are beautiful. They look like jewelry. The way light bounces off of the angular shapes...they just look so good in the bag.

Functionality:

I bought these irons for my 2023 season and began playing with them right away.  It did take some time to get used to them.  Coming out of a very forgiving cavity back set, I was a bit surprised at how unforgiving they were initially.  But after a couple of sim sessions I was very happy.  The control you get from these irons is amazing.  That can be a double edged sword however.  These are not for amateurs who haven't figured out shot shaping.

On the other hand, if you draw and fade the ball with ease, these irons will seriously improve your shot shaping game.

Forgiveness?   Not really.

The sweet spot on these irons isn't much larger than a golf ball.  So, if flush ball striking is a challenge for you, these are not a great choice.  I would instead recommend the ZX4s, which are very forgiving and offer a much larger club face and sweet spot.

Price:

Most mid to upper range irons fall into the $1000-1500 range.  These are no different, depending on club selection, grip & shaft selection, etc.  Definitely worth the $.

Summary:

I love these irons.  I had a great season with them.  I had planned on purchasing the ZX5 Mark IIs for 2024, but I think the ZX5s are better.  So, I'm going to play them this season too!
